Single-Arm Cable Triceps Extension
Safety Rating for 40+
Benefits for 40+
The unilateral execution is especially valuable for 40+ since significant side imbalances often develop over decades of one-sided daily activities or past injuries. These imbalances increase injury risk as the weaker side must compensate during bilateral exercises. The high cable SFR enables safe correction of these imbalances without systemic fatigue – important with the extended recovery times after 40.
Form Cues
- Single handle at high cable, elbow fixed at body
- Push one hand down until fully extended
- Train both sides with equal weight and reps
Common Mistakes
- Training stronger side with higher weight – goal is equalization, always work with the weaker side's weight
- Torso rotating to assist – eliminates isolation effect and creates asymmetric spinal loading
- Dismissing the exercise as unnecessary – especially for 40+, side imbalances are more common and risky than often assumed
- Speeding up tempo on the weaker side – maintain the same cadence on both sides
Modifications
Beginner
Train the weaker side first and use the rep count as reference for the stronger side. Light weight, 12–15 reps.
For Joint Issues
For elbow issues: limit ROM to pain-free range. Test different grip positions (pronation, neutral, supination) – depending on epicondylitis type, tendons respond differently.
Advanced
Slow eccentric (5 seconds) on the weaker side for accelerated equalization. Or: as finisher exercise after bilateral pushdowns.
Scientific Basis
Unilateral execution reveals side imbalances and enforces even development of both arms. Same SFR advantage as bilateral pushdowns. Ideal for correcting strength imbalances after injuries.
Contraindications
- Acute epicondylitis on the affected side – single-arm loading concentrates stress on the inflamed tendon
- Acute triceps tendon inflammation – single-arm extension is particularly stressful for the tendon insertion
- Wrist instability – the single handle requires more stabilization than bilateral variants
